2005 Nicolas Joly Clos de la Coulée de Serrant

Wine & Spirits: 93/100
Wine Spectator: 92/100

“The wine made us smile, sit back in our seats, and luxuriate.”

Professional reviews:

Wine & Spirits: “Showing the rich depth of the vintage, this fills the palate with warm, velvety fragrance, expanding in a voluptuous and concentrated spectrum of flavor. The fruit is fresh and bright, inseparably intertwined with the typically pronounced minerality of the vineyard, and the aromas persist on the finish in spicy, honeyed complexity. It’s a demanding, intensely soil-driven wine, and should enjoy a long development. 93/100 pts”

Wine Spectator: “An alluring whiff of ginger brioche gives way to a restrained palate of mineral, humus, persimmon and clementine. Taut, nervy finish will need some time to open up fully.” 92/100 pts

Wine Advocate: “Toasted nuts, over-ripe peach, broiled grapefruit, quince paste and briny sea breezes all rise from a pale, green-gold glass of 2005 Savennieres Coulee de Serrant.”

Wine Zag (Adam Zag): “The 2005 Coulée de Serrant shows a familiar deep golden color. Its nose has touches of mushroom, honey, and caramelized hazelnuts, with a melange of fruity aromatics incorporating pear, ripe apple, and peach. As overly impressive is the weight of the wine in your mouth. It offers a richness and voluptuousness that is simply not what you think of with Chenin Blanc. And it all marries with almost enough acidity, actually asking for more of that, and then rounds out a long finish with a hint of lime citrus. The first glass conjured up kindred thoughts of the magic Zind Humbrecht manufactures with Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gewurtztraminer from some of Alsace’s most heralded sites; never to be mistaken for these Zind Humbrecht produced varieties, but similar in richness and pronounced nuances that are hard to imagine until you taste wines from these producers. The wine made us smile, sit back in our seats, and luxuriate.”
