2009 Lucie et Auguste Lignier Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Jancis Robinson: 17.5/20

Notably dark crimson. Full and rich. Lots of dark cherry flavours. Deceptively forthcoming even now though presumably we should hold on to it for many a long year. Bittersweet. Very lively.”

John Gilman: “The 2009 Clos de la Roche from Kellen Lignier is a brilliant wine in the making, but again, I really wonder how well it is ultimately going to be able to absorb all of its new wood. The bouquet is deep, complex an utterly classic, offering up a superb blend of red and black cherries, bacon fat, coffee, complex soil tones, fresh herbs and a very generous lathering of expensive, classy new oak. The oak here smells every bit as luxuriant as the new wood used by Louis-Michel Liger-Belair in his Vosne-Romanée bottlings. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, nascently complex and very classy on the attack, with a sappy core of fruit, lovely soil inflection, but a backend that is gain currently fairly dried out by uncovered oak tannins. The wine would have plenty of ripe tannin without the addition of the tannins from the new wood, and I wonder how well it will ultimately be able to carry its lumber. It is quite clear that there is a great wine underneath the wood component. What is less clear is how well this wine will eventually come into balance, and what price it will have to pay to eventually carry its oak. (Drink between 2015-2030)  (9/2011)”
