Wine Advocate: “The Haart 2009 Piesporter Goldtropchen Riesling Grosses Gewachs displays the smoky, piquant side of toasted nuts, which taken along with a large dose of citrus oils engenders a decidedly bitter-sweet personality. Cyanic fruit pit piquancy and sheer stony underpinnings add to the sense of a rather stern, tight-lipped Riesling that to me doesn’t exactly bespeak what I take to be Goldtropfchen’s inherently exotic and tropically fruit-filled essence. A faintly lactic note might reflect the effect of a particular casks rather than any actual malo-lactic conversion, but the effect contributes to a certain sense of imprecision in this Riesling’s expansive, persistent, more-bitter-than-sweet finish. I’ve had a few remarkably expressive and well-preserved dry Haart Rieslings – a recently relished 1994, for instance – but on the whole (and particularly in this case) I would be inclined to plan on a 6-8 year optimum window of drinkability. (The corresponding Ohligsberg – or rather, the Ohligsberg intended to become trocken – was still fermenting when I visited in September and had 11 grams left to go before it even cleared the legal bar!)

Theo and Johannes Haart’s harvest commenced mid-October, and although it continued for nearly three weeks, they reported that rain arrived a bit earlier and more heavily here than elsewhere on the Mosel, so they were happy to have been almost entire done by then. Must weights of their exceedingly small crop were high from the get-go, so that care had to be taken in Piesport (stubbornly high-acid Wintrich was another matter) lest there be too much alcohol in the resultant dry wines or too little acidity. The Spatlesen were typically harvested a week later than the corresponding Kabinetts, yet seldom at significantly higher must weights.”
