2014 Schäfer-Fröhlich Felseneck Riesling Spätlese

20.95

John Gilman: 94/100
Wine Advocate: 91/100

Picked three weeks (!) later than the Kabinett and finished with 90 grams of residual sugar and less acidity, the 2014 Felseneck Riesling Spätlese from the south-facing slope shows a very clear, precise and stony/flinty bouquet; this leads to a juicy, finesse-full and very delicate palate of great finesse and elegance.

Professional reviews:

John Gilman (View from the Cellar): “According to Tim Fröhlich, the “regular” bottling of Spätlese from the Felseneck in 2014 had not botrytis at all, as the wine was made entirely from perfectly ripe, golden berries that were picked fairly early from forty year-old vines. The resulting wine has turned out marvelously well, wafting from the glass in a complex blend of white cherries, apple, wild yeasts, a profound base of slate, bee pollen and just a whisper of petrol. On the palate the wine is medium-full, focused and absolutely tensile today, with a lovely core, great filigree and a very, very long, snappy and slate-driven finish. This is a great Spätlese in the making, but give it another five years to really blossom (if you can!), as it has not yet begun to show any of its secondary nuances. 2020-2050.” 94/100 pts

The finish is extremely mineral and pure, light, tension-filled and salty. Impressive and almost Kabinett-like. Very stimulating.” 91/100 pts
